[...] reading over at Smashing Apps… [...]

A strange list, and I wonder how you judge these to be the most popular of all time. Blender and Audacity sure, but Gimpshop and Clamwin? And what about the most prevalent back-end OS systems, such as Apache, MySQL, and PHP, which run most dynamic websites?

Thanks for the tips which as always are very interesting and useful, but it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say that these are the most popular apps of all time.

I personally tend to favour SSuite Office’s free office suites. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

I think its quite a good list. These are probably the most common apps as used by most everyday people. I have used at least 70% of these apps myself.

Most popular open source software of all time? I think I’d have to go with Linux. If that doesn’t count for some reason, then Apache.

VLC, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP??

And why on earth Gimpshop instead of Gimp?

Good attempt at a strong list! I think these type lists are relative to the users environment.

Would love to see a list for the non programmers…

Firefox
Google Docs

Stuff like that.

Mike

There is a much more popular FOSS than GNU/Linux: eMule.

Also Azureus/Vuze is very popular and it is not in the list.

Personally, LAMPP has 4 of the most popular FOSS.

I miss VLC…

Not surprised to see many of the programs I use here. Good list.

AbiWord (word processor)
Gnumeric (spreadsheet)
Ubuntu (any version)
Opera (browser)

@Kevin
Ubuntu is not software it’s a distribution (collection of software)
and Opera is NOT open source.

VLC definitely missing in that list.
Partially don’t agree with the list, but a few of the programs do belong in that list.

“You might not be able to enjoy all the features as commercial software but it will really help you to perform your task in a better way when your pocket does not allow you to..” ???? ahh!?!!?? What are you saying?!?!?
That costly, shyttti propietary software is better because it cost???
You man. DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE.
What a shame of article…
I don’t know how.. this propietaries softwares can be better than open source ones:

* Notepad vs Notepad++
* Explorer vs Firefox
* Paint vs gimp¿?
* What ever similar vs Filezilla (filezilla is the best
it can connect to SFTP where others(expensives) can’t even dream about it)

And those are only examples of the “supposed bests” which in my opinion are not the best… ahhh I didn’t needed to explain these part since I’m criticizing a rookie.

Good luck Windows boy

I would say GIMP is more popular than GIMPshop!

@Michael Torbert, Wordpress is a web platform – I think we’d have to have another list of them together with Joomla, Gallery, Drupal, etc!

@gatuus
Sure the open source stuff is better than some of the proprietary software out there. but not all of it…
you say notepad vs notepad++, what about textmate?
you say explorer vs firefox, what about safari?
you say paint vs gimp, what about photoshop cs4???
you say whatever vs filezilla, what about transmit?
and like the author of the article said, if you can’t afford photoshop, gimp will do the job nicely. if you can’t afford transmit, filezilla will do nicely, if you can’t afford the best of the best, chances are there’s an open source solution waiting to be found which will do the job better than the ones you CAN afford
