Look, I never post about this kind of thing; and while I despise Microsoft, I don’t count that enmity among my geeky obsessions. I have always hated them in a casual, resigned way, as I do fruit flies, reality shows, and people online who spell “ever” with an “a”
But this time, as they say, it’s personal, so I feel I have to post.
Last year, my wife set up a site using MS Office Live (I’m a Web designer, but I was busy and she was in a hurry) using her personal (www.hername.com) domain; and when she decided that MS Office Live did in fact suck as expected and she wanted use another service, we could not wrest back control of the domain name.
A quick perusal of the fine print in the Terms of Service verified what we feared – when you create a site with MS Office Live, ownership of the domain is transferred to Microsoft.
While it’s theoretically possible to get it back, in all practicality they make it almost impossible. Unless you’re in a position to take a week off from work and negotiate with Microsoft full time – most of which will be spent on hold or in recursive option-menu hell – it’s better to just drop it.
My wife is a professional journalist (including some investigative work) and researcher who has used the domain in question for over a decade, and she gave up after about 6 hours.
Also, the service itself, as noted, kind of sucks.
Caveat emptor — especially when Microsoft offers you something for “free.”
Nice post. But I own a hosting server. So a post with suites like Collabive, BaseCamp, OpenX, etc. would be great. Where I can download these web apps and host them on my own server.

Freewebs isn’t that good because there’s a 20-30 page limit, and then you have to buy the premium package. But Weebly is amazing! You can put adsense on your pages and they will still host your site for free if you use a top-level domain… All you have to do is pay the price of the domain, which is usually around $10.
I know one more mobile site http://fonet.mobi where you can do mobile blogging free and lots of other activity.
Love Edicy, creating http://361thinking.edicypages.com/ took me about 6 minutes, am yet to sign up to their Pro service that allows using my own domain.
Wasn’t there a website called like bluecube or something that was one of the premire sites like this but it charged.
where is get a dedicated server. imo that is the best move you can make if serious about the internet.

I have tried most of them, they are very easy to use and the only regrets is that the URL has to include their domain.
I wanted to create my own website to promote products and didn’t know anything about it. I tried to build one using “how to build a websites”. They were easy to use but they didnt really do what I needed and like you said the control panel was way confusing.
I found this place on Facebook. They guranteed I could build a website after I used them. It was actually pretty cool. They were able to log right onto my computer and show me everything I needed. It took about 2 hours. When I was done I could build just about any kind of website I wanted.
( I have found website building is very addictive )
I keep making page after page and can customize it anyway I want.
It was only $75.00 and they were very professional. I think they were just starting out. The guy that helped me was really nice. He explained everything he was doing while I watched from my computer screen. Then I took over and he watched and talked me through all the steps.

I learned a lot about yahoo sitebuilder which is very easy to use. You can make any kind of web page you want. I didnt learn any html because it is all cut and paste. I did learn some tricks the guy showed me to get really cool things I can ad to my website for free.
You have to sign up with Yahoo web hosting because thats is what sitebuilder needs to publish. It is very cheap though. I pay by the month so if I want to cancel I can at any time. I also get a lot of e mail accounts with Yahoo and unlimited bandwidth, what ever that means.
