Dolphin is a great community builder software.

  2. Or use an online based service to create your social network like http://kickapps.com, http://sixgroups.com or others.
Pro: Up and running within minutes
    Con: Less customizable

I’d add Drupal to the list. It’s part content management system and part framework. With lots of community functionality built in, plus thousands of add-on modules, it can be used to build and manage just about any kind of website.

  4. Great list, I’d arguably add Drupal like Matt said and also us – Lovd! :)

LovdbyLess launched mid-March of 2008 and is also an open source social networking platform – free to download and customize. It’s built with Ruby on Rails and requires a fundamental grasp of the language, but it’s easy to catch on. Please test it out and let us know of any questions or concerns. You can’t beat the price. ;)

    @Matt and Lovd
Thanks for adding Drupal here! Looks like Lovd is really good. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the pointer to Elgg and PHPizabi — never heard of either.

I’m confused by what you mean by “Social Networking” in this particular post. Mind you, i’ve yet to really get what either “Web 2.0″ or “Social Networking” (SN) exactly mean. I just think “AJAX” for the former and “online info’ comm’ systems for groups” for the latter.

When i checked what Elgg and PHPizabi provide, compare that to what i’ve gotten out of the Free/Libre/Opensource (FLO) systems i’ve supposed worked with for building SN systems, the ones i’ve worked with seem as feature-rich or better than Elgg and PHPizabi (if not better presented).

What i’ve used: a bit of Plone, PHPNuke, Xoops, Joomla/Mambo, Drupal, as mentioned in the posts just above, and, the same one this blog is using, WordPress.

All except WordPress, a sort of hyper-extensible blogging system, i’d say, are commonly classed as CMSs (Content Management Systems). They’re all also cross-comparable by features, including FLO-licensing or other, at http://www.cmsmatrix.org/. Elgg is covered there but not PHPizabi.

  7. AD Marshall says:

Oops! WordPress is also covered at the CMS Matrix site. (I had had “Match case” switched on when i tried to find it. Duh.)

  8. AD Marshall says:

Couldn’t find an admin eddress for this site, so… there seems to be a problem with your human-checking and captcha set-up for posting comments here — though Firefox NoScript plug-in may be doing this. These are to two of the warning i saw while commenting:

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter – headers already sent (output started at /var/hsphere/local/home/smashapp/smashingapps.com/wp-content/plugins/SK2/sk2_second_chance.php:2) in /var/hsphere/local/home/smashapp/smashingapps.com/wp-content/plugins/contactforms/cforms.php on line 200
    Kind-a-Captcha

Please type the code below in the input field and click on Submit (characters can only be letters from A to F and digits from 0 to 9).
    captcha_img

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter – headers already sent (output started at /var/hsphere/local/home/smashapp/smashingapps.com/wp-content/plugins/SK2/sk2_second_chance.php:2) in /var/hsphere/local/home/smashapp/smashingapps.com/wp-content/plugins/contactforms/cforms.php on line 200
Sorry, bad luck on this one, cow-boy, try again. You have 4 attempts left.
