After long wait and excitement it seems the new digg launched. Yes! you read it right digg releases their version 4. People have too many reservations with digg’s new version but today is a day when every one has to accept it with it’s all pros and cons. At the moment, there are some deployment issues and implementations of the new version is going on due to which digg is responding very slow, but digg’s administration is working very hard to get it rolled out successfully. Through emails and online social networks, you share a lot of information with your friends. This includes photographs, videos, documents, and a lot more. Backupify is a web service that can be used to backup the data you store on email servers and online social networks. The site offers free and paid packages, with the free package offering 2 GB of backup storage. A number of websites are supported including Flickr, Twitter, Delicious, Zoho, Google Docs, Photobucket, WordPress, Basecamp, Gmail, Facebook, FriendFeed, Blogger, Hotmail, Picasa Web Albums, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar.

After signing up for an account and logging in to it, you can start adding your accounts from the abovementioned websites to be backed up. If you are using the free package you will be able to add only one account per service.

To view the backups you can access the “Archive” page from where you select an added service.

Once the service is selected, your backed up data is shown in a simple interface.

The “History” page records all successful and unsuccessful backups.

If you want to view your account details, simply enter the “Profile” page which is also where you can upgrade your account from.

Overall the service is a great way to secure the data store on your online email and social networking accounts. The free package will suit most internet users; if not, the paid packages are quite economical and provide great storage capacity.

Plenton: A ‘Cloud Sharing’ Website With Wonderful Social Media Potential

Digg, Facebook, Twitter, and all similar sites are a part of something called online social media. Social media is what we use to promote trending topics, websites, products, and interesting links on the web. The sites I just mentioned dominate the social media arena. But there is an up-and-coming competitor to these sites. I am referring to Plenton.

Plenton is a ‘cloud sharing’ website with wonderful social media potential. I remember when I first visited Digg, it took me a while to get used to all the links and controls. In contrast, Plenton was a breeze to get used to. All I had to do was create a free account and start sharing.

After you create an account on Plenton (and optionally upload a display picture) not only can you share links to interesting online content, but you can also upload media (images and video). Whatever you share on the Plenton network, the Plenton community will vote and contribute related media material to your link thereby making it bigger. This process turns your share into a cloud and this is the ‘cloud sharing’ concept.

Enlarge Facebook Photos By Hover Mouse Pointer (Firefox+Chrome Plugin)

I find Facebook’s picture viewing interface inconvenient. When I am viewing a friend’s album, I can view the pictures as thumbnails in the main album page. To view a picture’s true size I have to click it. Then I have to go back to the album (photo thumbnails view) and select another image to enlarge. The process can become quite time consuming. But thanks to two browser extension, I no longer have to click back and forth while viewing pictures on Facebook.

The first is Facebook PhotoZoom (there is no space between the words Photo and Zoom).

This is an addon for Mozilla Firefox and can be used while viewing Facebook photos. Its function is a simple one: it shows you the true size of an image thumbnail in Facebook. Whether that thumbnail is in a photo album or the thumbnail of an image shared on your wall or news feed, you simply place our mouse pointer over the thumbnail and view its enlarged version in a hovering view.

The second extension is Facebook Photo Zoom (there is a space between the words Photo and Zoom).

This tool is an extension for Google Chrome and works much in the same way. In addition to enlarging your Facebook photo thumbnails in a hovering window view, the extension places an icon near the bottom right of Facebook i.e. next to the Chat bar. You can toggle Facebook Photo Zoom on / off from this icon.

Hence it is up to you whether to use the hovering window photo enlargement or use Facebook’s original interface.

These extension are absolute must have for all Facebook accountholders using Firefox or Chrome. They have certainly saved me the umpteen clicks required to view a photo album. I am positive they will be as helpful to you as they were to me.

StickyBits: Attach Unlimited Content to Barcodes On Any Product (iPhone + Android)

I remember when my friends and I used only Orkut for social networking. Now many users have migrated over to other networks or use more than one social networking site. Suppose we want to view all of Coldplay’s videos; there is no single URL that will have all the videos; we will need to visit multiple URLs. To share the videos, we will need to share all those URLs. The same can be applied to any other thing we are looking for – we will need to visit multiple URLs.

After finding the URLs we are looking for, what if there was a way to store them in a ‘bag’ and label the bag accordingly? Say we store all those video URLs in a virtual bag and label the bag “Coldplay’s Videos.” The next time we need to view or share those videos, all we need to do is share the bag instead of the individual URLs.

BagTheWeb does exactly that.

BagTheWeb is a free to use website that lets users create virtual bags and store URLs in it. MashPedia The Real-time Encyclopedia Searches Many Online Sources In One Go

The sources in most online encyclopedias are static. Take Wikipedia for example. User submitted articles on Wikipedia have fixed sources for their articles. A change in the source therefore can present a problem for that particular article.

Suppose there was an encyclopedia with the latest sources accompanying its article on a subject. Not only will that be a great help to the encyclopedia’s user, but it would make the article more reliable as well.

Realizing the usefulness of such a search engine / encyclopedia and how beneficial it can be to internet users, Mashpedia was created.

Mashpedia is a free to use online encyclopedia that updates and gathers the results of our query in real time. The advantage of this is that we get new / different results each time we execute a search, even if our keywords are the same.

In addition to news and trending topics, the site has a simple search bar located at its homepage.

Entering our keyword in the search bar and starting our search quickly shows us gathered results from a variety of sources including social media sites and video hosting sites, in addition to standard search engine results.

In the above image, I executed a search for ‘electrons’ and came up with the Mashpedia article on it. The pane on the right details the properties of an electron whereas the pane on the left show us YouTube and social media sources for the keyword ‘electrons’; these sources are updated in real time and will be different the next time we search for ‘electrons.’

As we scroll down the page, we find other related sources from numerous other social networking sites and informative websites.

News results regarding our query are also shown.

The absolute end of the page lets us leave a comment on the article.
