Hide Tabs In Chrome With A Click Of A Button
Workplaces can be boring especially if we finish our work early. Usually we turn to the internet to entertain us when the boredom gets too much to take. But the Boss’s fear makes us tread cautiously. We need to keep an eye out for our superiors passing by. If they do pass by, we close our browser and resultantly lose all the tabs we had open. Finding those lost URLs can take a lot of time if there were many tabs open.
Presenting a solution to that predicament is PanicButton.
PanicButton is a browser extension for Chrome that provides us with a way to temporarily hide the websites we are browsing. After installing the extension you will notice a new icon in Chrome’s address bar; the icon is a red circle with a white exclamation point at its center.
Whenever you feel that somebody is about to pass by and will be able to view your open tabs, to hide your tabs from this person, simply click on the extension’s icon. Here is what happens to the icon:
Our tabs are closed with their URLs saved and our Chrome startpage is opened up. The extension keeps the URLs saved even if we close the Chrome window.
To restore our tabs we simply re-click on the icon which has now turned green and indicates the number of saved URLs. Note that when restored, our tabs get reloaded thus the function might not be best with websites containing content that changes on every visit. For other sites however, the extension should work fine.
The extension’s options let us choose a hotkey (the ESC key) for the tab-hiding feature; through the options page we can also choose to set a password that will need to be entered in case we want to restore tabs.

How To Easily View And Manage Downloads From Status Bar In Firefox
Most download managers show us a semitransparent floating window. This window indicates the progress of our current downloads. Firefox, unfortunately, does not have this brilliant feature. To view the progress of our downloads we need to have the Downloads window in Firefox in view; surfing the web in other tabs and continuing with our work thus becomes very difficult unless we are fine with being unaware of our downloads’ progress.
A tool that fixes this little inconvenience is Download Statusbar.
Download Statusbar is an addon for Firefox that keeps us notified on our downloading progress. As the name of the addon suggests, when we are downloading files, a new bar is shown at the bottom of Firefox indicating the download’s status.
By default, it completed download can be seen in blue whereas the completed portion of presently downloading file is shown in blue. The completed percentage of the download as well as the remaining time is shown in each download ‘button.’
Hovering the mouse pointer over any completed download shows us the files details in a floating window above.
The ‘button’ can be right-clicked to open the file or its source.
These basic additions remarkably improve the downloading interface of Firefox. But in addition to these, what will make users happy is the great number of options we can select in the addon. By accessing the addon’s options, we can choose to play a sound when a download completes, clear our download cache each time we exit Firefox, and choose a custom appearance for the Statusbar. These are only few of the settings we can play around with.
Adding an important interface improvement to Firefox, Download Statusbar is a must have addon for all users of the browsers.
