The only issue with keeping groups organized over email is timeline and task management. It is so hard to keep a schedule when you have to sift through emails to figure out who was assigned to which task when.
Another great free group collaboration website is teamr.com. They have email, SMS notifications, calendaring, a website, surveys, reporting, etc all in their free package.
